Main Factors Affecting Cooling Tower Performance

Article source:未知editor-in-charge:adminpopularity:time:2026-10-21 09:48

Undesirable cooling tower outlet water temperature is a common issue encountered by users. While equipment failure is often the first suspected cause, cooling performance in practical operation is governed by a combination of multiple conditions. Ambient wet-bulb temperature, circulating water flow, packing condition, fan air volume, water distribution uniformity, and scaling or blockage in pipelines all directly impact heat exchange efficiency. Troubleshooting these factors systematically is far more effective than replacing the equipment blindly.

1. Wet-Bulb Temperature

The cooling limit of a cooling tower is constrained by the ambient wet-bulb temperature. A higher wet-bulb temperature makes it harder to lower the outlet water temperature. It is normal for the outlet water temperature to rise by several degrees in hot and humid summer weather compared with spring and autumn, which does not necessarily indicate equipment malfunction. For diagnosis, cross-reference local meteorological conditions before checking other items.

2. Circulating Water Flow

Mismatch between actual circulating water flow and the tower’s rated parameters also degrades cooling performance. When the flow rate exceeds the design value, water passes through the packing too quickly for sufficient heat dissipation, resulting in elevated outlet water temperature. During operation, match the pump flow rate with the tower’s rated specification and avoid over-flow operation. If the water flow is excessive, adjust valves appropriately to bring flow within the acceptable range.

3. Packing Condition

Packing serves as the core component for heat exchange. After long-term operation, packing may degrade, collapse, scale up, or clog with debris, which reduces the effective heat exchange area and weakens cooling capacity. Conduct routine inspections for packing aging, collapse and surface scaling. Minor clogging can be resolved by flushing; packing with severe aging or widespread collapse shall be replaced promptly.

4. Air Volume and Water Distribution

Insufficient fan air volume prevents heat from being discharged, leading to high water temperature. Reduced air volume can be caused by loose belts, incorrect blade angles or blocked air inlets. Uniform water distribution is equally critical. Clogged nozzles of the water distributor lead to concentrated water flow, leaving parts of the packing dry and wasting heat exchange area. Check water distributor nozzles regularly and clear blockages once uneven water distribution occurs.

5. Water Quality and Scaling

Circulating water quality management is essential for sustained cooling performance. Poor water control causes scale deposition and algae growth on pipelines and packing surfaces, gradually reducing heat transfer efficiency. Properly manage circulating water quality to minimize scale and algae buildup, together with regular blowdown and chemical dosing, to maintain stable cooling capacity of the tower over the long run.

6. Recommendations for Daily Operation & Maintenance

To sum up, stable cooling performance relies on standardized daily management. Carry out periodic inspections of packing, water distributors and fans; keep pump flow properly matched; and maintain good circulating water quality. When abnormal outlet water temperature occurs, troubleshoot in this sequence: wet-bulb temperature → water flow → packing → air volume → water quality. Most under-cooling issues can be fixed by adjusting operating parameters and performing cleaning and maintenance, without the need for premature equipment replacement.
