Anti-Corrosion Measures for FRP Cooling Towers
FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) boasts favorable inherent corrosion resistance. However, when deployed in chemical facilities, coastal salt-spray environments and other harsh working conditions, the shell may suffer aging, delamination and resin peeling after long-term exposure to corrosive moisture. Effective anti-corrosion management should be implemented across three phases: manufacturing, operation and maintenance.
1. Manufacturing Phase: Material Selection
The corrosion resistance of FRP largely depends on the resin grade and lining structure. For highly corrosive service conditions, high-performance corrosion-resistant resin systems are recommended, with an additional anti-corrosion lining on the inner shell surface to build multi-layer protection. This treatment is completed during fabrication and cannot be easily retrofitted later. Clear anti-corrosion specifications shall be specified at the time of procurement according to the operating environment.
2. Operation Phase: Water Quality Control & Routine Inspection
During operation, the pH value of circulating water shall be regulated. Sustained acidic or alkaline water will accelerate resin aging. Regular inspections should focus on shell joints, flange connections and bolt holes, where leakage and localized corrosion tend to occur. Any cracked joints or surface damage must be repaired promptly to prevent progressive delamination.
3. Shutdown Maintenance: Cleaning & Repair
During outage maintenance, residual corrosive media inside the shell shall be thoroughly removed to avoid prolonged soaking. For areas with surface chalking, peeling or minor damage, abrasive finishing followed by coating repair is required to restore the protective barrier. For coastal installations, exterior rinsing after salt-spray seasons helps reduce salt deposition.
In summary, anti-corrosion protection for FRP cooling towers is not a one-time solution. Proper material selection at the manufacturing stage, water quality regulation and joint inspection during operation, plus thorough cleaning and patching during shutdowns, can extend service life and cut replacement costs caused by corrosion.
